University of Otago Master of Planning

Programme known for excellence

Brisbane Field Trip
Assessing residential character in Brisbane's West End

Welcome to the Otago planning programme. Otago's Master of Planning (MPlan) degree is recognised nationally and internationally for professional excellence. It contains exciting and flexible study options leading to excellent employment opportunities.

The curriculum comprises lectures, field work, hui, and research, with considerable emphasis on practical experience. You can also undertake planning related papers in a specialist area of your choice, including impact assessment, environmental management, urban design, geographic information systems, urban geography, coastal management, environmental and planning law, iwi planning, and a range of physical processes in environmental systems.

You will work on real projects with planning practitioners as part of your course, and in recent field locations have included Melbourne, Christchurch, Rotorua, Alexandra, Brisbane, Wellington, Central Otago and Nelson.

We welcome applications from recent graduates and from those seeking a change in career. Breadth of study in the first degree is important, so for students whose majors were not in the social or life sciences some evidence of exposure to these disciplines, and evidence of interest and commitment to planning as a career, will be an advantage. Part-time study options for students in the workplace can be provided.

Please apply by November 20th in the year prior to entry

We look forward to meeting you.
