Planning and the Treaty of Waitangi

Otakou
Above: Each year planning students visit a Marae in Otago.

The University of Otago is committed to promoting the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and to working with Maori in planning.

The Planning Programme recognises the need to develop an understanding of these principles, involving local iwi (especially Kaumatua of Te Runanga O Otakou) in the Planning programme.

Core planning papers examine topics relating to the Treaty, customary resource practices and Tikanga Maori, with visits to marae and talks by expert speakers as part of the learning process. Students are also encouraged to enrol in papers offered by other Departments as planning-related papers.
